Om, the mystic syllable of A- U- M is venerated by the Brahman as well as by the Buddhists. Historically, devotees regarded it to be too sacred to be uttered aloud and only formed the sound silently with the lips. The A-U-M Mantra generally begins with Om and ends with Hum.  This widely known mantra of Avalokitesora is the six syllable 'Om Mani Padme Hum'.
