Himalayan Trade and Tour opened in 2006 in Berkeley Springs, WV.  Our website was just launched in September of 2009. 

The business is owned by Mark Garfinkel and Kishor Shrestha.  The two met by chance back in 2004 when Mark, who was then General Counsel of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) was on business travel in Asia.  After reviewing projects in a number of countries, he took a side trip to Nepal where he hired Kishor as his guide in Kathmandu.  Kishor graciously invited Mark and his traveling companion to his home where Mark met his family.

The two stayed in touch.  It was two years later when the Maoist demonstrations had temporarily destroyed the tourist industry, that Kishor came to the United States looking for business opportunities.  Mark suggested an import business and soon HTT was born.

Kishor now lives with his entire family here in Berkeley Springs, WV.  He has an H1B work visa and is seeking his green card.  Mark and Monique moved to Berkeley Springs from Silver Spring, MD in August 2009.  Now clinging to guns and religion they are happily ensconced in an old craftsman home on Hospital Hill overlooking the town.  They avoid trips back to the city as much as possible.
